Leap Second effect on Topcon GNSS Products - June 2017

There is a critical firmware update for Topcon GNSS receivers. The satellite systems routinely correct for a Leap Second event that impacts all GNSS products around the world.  The next almanac update for Leap Second is anticipated in July.  As a result the GNSS receivers need to be updated to address the Leap Second so that they perform optimally.

Topcon has updated firmware to address this new almanac that will start broadcasting next month. Please register your products (if you haven't already) and press the "Firmware and Software Updates" button on your product page to see if new firmware is available for your product(s). Please update all GNSS receivers to the latest firmware to prevent loss of productivity. 


What is a Leap Second (LS)?
A leap second is an occasional one-second adjustment to Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) to keep its time of day close to the astronomical time (UT1). Leap seconds are added to our clocks to compensate for the Earth's slowing rotation. The International Earth Rotation and Reference System Service (IERS) in Paris, France observes the Earth's rotation and compares it to atomic time. Since this system of correction was implemented in 1972, 27 leap seconds have been inserted, the most recent on December 31, 2016 at 23:59:60 UTC (2016 LS Event).
